Is Your Hot Water Getting Heater Too Old To Work? What To Know Before You Replace It

If your hot water tank isn't performing and it's a struggle to get enough hot water to take a shower, the plumbing company should come assess the unit. There are a lot of potential problems that could be preventing the unit from getting the water hot, and the age of the unit could be the issue. If your water heater is a decade old, you shouldn't stick any more money in it for repairs.

When you get hot water faster you don't run water as long waiting for it to warm, and you aren't wasting gas and electricity for as long. Here are a few things to consider.

Replace the Unit with a Traditional Energy Start Unit

If you have to replace the water heater you should make sure that the model you purchase is an Energy Star model. These units work with the highest efficiency so you can lower the utility expenses around your house. The plumbing company can use all of your current connections for gas and water if you're going to get a model that is designed in a similar way, and that is a similar size.

Get a Tankless Water Heater

A tankless water heater is designed much differently than a traditional water heater. The water is heated instantly when it comes through the unit, instead of heated throughout the day and stored until it's needed. The unit is a small box that can be put in a closet or under a sink, and using multiple units around the house will improve the efficiency.

This also allows you to get as much was as you need when you want it. These are available in both gas and electric models, and they are a great way to update your home. Ask the plumbing company where they would put the water heaters in your home, and what it would cost.

If your hot water heater isn't doing well and you think it's time for an upgrade, have the plumbing company come give you a quote for both these options. You may be able to sell or scrap your old water heater if you are worried about spending a ton of money on the new unit that you need. Once you have a quote, get at least one more so you can compare the costs from different companies for labor and for the new hot water heater model you want.

Home Repair Tips for the Novice

When I bought my first home, I was terribly inexperienced when it came to maintaining it. It seemed as if something was always broken. After spending a weekend battling with my oven, I decided that I enough was enough. I started reading everything I could about things related to the home. By the end of my research, I still could not fix my plumbing, but I could look knowledgeable as the plumber explained what was wrong. In an effort to help others avoid the tedious task of reading book after book about plumbing and appliance repairs, I started this blog. Hopefully, this information will save someone from a weekend spent wrestling with their own appliances.
